"Then the disciples of John came to HIM with the question, 'How is it, that we and the Pharisees fast on many occasions, but not YOUR disciples?'
JESUS answered them, 'How can you expect wedding guests to mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The time will come, when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then, they will fast.'" - Matthew 9:14-15
(The people of Judah fast so that GOD will hear their petitions. These could be public prayers to ask for rain.
Is it perhaps only a matter of bowing the head? GOD neither wants the death of the sinner nor the humiliation of HIS creature. GOD loves people, but HE loves them all and not only the little landowners of Judah fearful for their crops; HE also loves the laborers and the slaves of these little landholders. GOD's demands are clear: do away with unjust chains and share with the rest.)
